What are Thread Veins?
Thread veins are small red or blue veins that can appear anywhere on the body, lying just below the surface of the skin (the dermis). The vessels become dilated and that is what makes them more visible. Thread veins can appear as single veins, widely dispersed, or as a collection of broken veins laying close together. They can also appear as a collection of tiny blood vessels arising from a single point, known as spider naevi. Thread veins can also be referred to as broken veins or telangiectasia.
Thread veins can be caused by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: wind, and extreme weather conditions, use of steroid creams, hormonal factors that occur during pregnancy and exposure to ultraviolet light.
Where do Thread Veins appear?
Most commonly thread veins appear on the face, cheeks, nose, arms and legs. But they can appear anywhere on the body.
